Christmas is just around the corner. And to prove that, Google announced that they are releasing a couple of Android features.
Google is the gift that keeps on giving. To begin with, the search engine giant releases several Android features, which include the digital car key functionality. Although released only recently, Google already announced this feature during the Google I/O 2021 last May.
So what does it do? The feature functions like the keyless technology that some cars have as their feature. However, using Android’s digital car key feature, one would be able to unlock their vehicle even without taking the phone out of the pocket. This feature also allows the user to share the virtual key with others, for those who are sharing the vehicle.
The company explained that they’re using an Ultra Wideband (UWB) to develop the feature. With that said, only users with UWB-supporting devices will be able to “unlock” this feature. Android users who don’t have any of these devices, don’t worry. You would still be able to use the digital car keys feature with the Near Field Communication (NFC) technology. With this, car owners would be able to open the vehicle by simply tapping the phone.
Is The Digital Car Keys Feature Available To Everyone?
Although Google already announced its release, it is still in the post-development stage so not all Android users can use them yet. For now, the feature is only available in Google Pixel 6 and 6 Pro. One can still use it if they have the Samsung Galaxy S21, which is only available in limited countries. Last, the feature is only compatible with several MBW cars for now. In the next few months, this feature will become available to more users and vehicles.
